Ventura College Spring 2012 Cardboard Chair Project

Have you ever seen chairs made out of cardboard? My sculpture students did a fabulous job of making one-of-a-kind, unique cardboard chairs. They were instructed to only use cardboard, any type of adhesive, and paint (optional). This year the range of designs covered a stool all the way to the electric chair!  One chair had a cup holder for convenience. Others were created with a specific functional purpose in mind. Others incorporated mathematics into the design. See for yourself.

The chair is carefully woven together with texture on the side. She also put in a drawer for added function. 

Ventura College - A Day in the Ceramic Lab

It's week 6 of the Spring semester. Everyone seems to be getting the hang of working on their projects. These are some impromptu snap shots from one corner of the ceramics lab.

Ventura College Exturdinary Architecture Landscape

This was a new project. Students were to choose a historical piece of architecture and create a landscape using extruder, coil, and slab construction. The final project was required to be hanging sculpture.

Ventura College Antonym Teapots (hard slab)

Students used clay to build two teapots without soft and round edges. The two teapots need to have opposite characteristics. Here's some examples.

Ventura College Beginning Sculpture - Self Portrait

The Spring 2012 Beginning Sculpture Class is having a great start. Students are assigned to use wire, paper mache, plaster cloth, paint and other mixed media to create a representational self-portrait. What  wonderful result! Student portraits were influenced by film makers, comic heroes, chefs and artists. Some students portrayed their self portrait through an abstract or dream like expression. In the end, the outcome is dynamic and thought provoking.

(This biodegrable sculpture is made from  tree bark and beans. The organic materials gives this sculpture a tribal looking effect. The concept of her sculpture is that  everything has to go back to nature. Be sure to take photos to watch  the project decompose over time.)
